Homemade Garam Masala Powder

Garam masala is a must-have spice blend in Pakistani cooking — it adds that warm, aromatic magic to everything from everyday curries and biryanis to kebabs and pulao.

Many people wonder: What exactly is garam masala made of? And why does homemade always taste so much better than store-bought?

The good news? You don’t need to stress about hunting for the perfect packet anymore! This is our family’s closely guarded secret recipe for homemade garam masala powder — made with just a handful of simple, everyday whole spices.

Unlike some Indian versions that might include more seeds or milder notes, Pakistani garam masala often leans into bold, smoky warmth with ingredients like black peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, black cardamom, cumin, and sometimes a touch of bay leaf or nutmeg. Every family tweaks the mix slightly, making it truly special.

When you roast and grind these spices fresh at home, the flavor explodes — deep, fragrant, and way more powerful than anything from a jar.

It’s super easy to make, stores well for months, and instantly takes your Pakistani dishes to the next level.
